calculator Energy Efficiency Saving
The toggle button at the top of the calculator lets you choose between heating and cooling. When you select Cooling, the slider at the bottom allows you to see what kind of energy savings you can expect, based on the SEER rating of the new unit you get. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is an energy efficiency rating for air conditioners. The higher the SEER, the better the energy performance, and the more you save!
When you select Heating, the slider at the bottom allows you to see what kind of energy savings you can expect, based on the AFUE rating of the new unit you get. Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) is a measure of your furnace’s heating efficiency. The higher the AFUE percentage, the more efficient the furnace – and the greater your potential for saving.
The calculator defaults to base its calculations on the US National Average, but you can select your state from the “Based on” dropdown, found right above the SEER/AFUE slider.
Customize to Your Home
Want a more precise estimate of your savings? Use the “Customize to Your Home” button at the very bottom of the calculator to enter the AFUE of your furnace or the SEER rating of your air conditioner and your current energy cost to see an estimate of your savings based on what you currently have. Not sure what your energy costs are? This information is generally available on your utility bill. Take a look at MidAmerican Energy’s sample bill to get an idea as to where you can find your usage information.
