3 Ways You’re Damaging Your Air Conditioner
& how to stop

Air Conditioning Summer
The last thing you want on a hot summer day is:
#1 Someone stealing the last popsicle from the freezer
#2 Your AC to stop working
Since we are an authority on HVAC systems (with popsicle connoisseur coming in a close 2nd), we’ll tackle #2 and discuss the damage you could be unknowingly doing to your air conditioner.
#1 Forgetting the Filter
A clean filter is key to increase the longevity of your HVAC system, and the consequences for forgetting to change your filter on a regular basis could cost you a pretty penny. A dirty filter will strain to push air through your system. This strain will undoubtedly result in damage to the unit and cause your energy bills to rise.
What to do instead: Follow the manufacturers guidelines (located on your filter) as to how often you should replace it. Our best advice is to set a reminder on your phone. This way, you’re less likely to forget. Your AC and wallet will thank you.
#2 Lack of Service
It’s unlikely that you physically see your HVAC system on a regular basis. For this reason, it may be easy to forget to schedule annual air conditioner and furnace maintenance, but think if you accidentally neglected your car in the same manner. If you never got an oil change or refused to take it to the shop when the check engine light came on, you could expect your vehicle to last you a couple years, at best.
An air conditioner is a complicated piece of equipment that is subject breakdowns and may need repairs along the way. The best way to increase your AC’s lifespan is to keep on top of yearly maintenance. You can trust our HVAC professionals to diagnose and fix small problems before they become huge, costly ones.
What to do instead: Schedule your Spring Checkup every year to make sure your AC is in tip top shape. Take a cue from “Forgetting the Filter,” and set a calendar reminder on your phone. Easier still: ask us to sign you up for a maintenance package, and we’ll do the remembering for you!
#3 Misusing the Thermostat
Here’s the scenario: You wake up feeling hot, so you set your thermostat back a few degrees. Before you leave, you set it to a higher temperature, unbeknownst to your significant other. Your significant other starts feeling the heat, so they turn the thermostat down, and then up again before they leave for the day. A few more clicks of the thermostat here and there (maybe your small humans [i.e. children] like to get in on the action?) and your family has managed to change the temperature in your home too many times to count. Sound familiar? All these fluctuations in temperature could be setting your air conditioner up for failure. Your system has to work harder to drop down to the cooler temperatures, which leads to more wear and tear on the system.
What to do instead: Install a programmable thermostat and learn how to use it. Keep a small range of temperature settings and keep it consistent.
